Discovering My Inner Dog Person: Favorite Products
Growing up, my family always had dogs - often two, even three at a time. But I never quite felt the connection that others did. When our dogs passed away, I was sad mostly because my family was sad, but I never shed a tear. I wondered if this meant I wasn't a "dog person" at all. Perhaps it was time to give cats a try!
Fast forward to my college years, when I moved in with my boyfriend (now husband), who was and is definitely a dog person. He convinced me that we needed a dog. It took some time but we eventually found ourselves at the humane society in Flagstaff, Arizona after a call from a friend screaming "they have puppies!!!" In the very back, we found a litter of scared, crying puppies, covered in their own mess. Despite the circumstances, I fell in love the moment I met Jasper. My only stipulation going into this was that we get a female dog, but of course, I left with the only male in the entire litter - a 7-pound, white, spotted, fluffer. Jasper was the one; we could not leave without him.
Four years later, Jasper is one of the best things in our world. He's my best friend, and I am most certainly a dog person. I just hadn't been able to connect with the dogs from my childhood. One of my childhood dogs preferred being outside than anywhere near us, I guess the feeling is mutual. Jasper is the opposite; he never leaves my side, and I wouldn't have it any other way. We call him my white shadow. Below, I share some of the best websites and products I have discovered along this journey.
Finding the Perfect Dog Sitter
I travel a lot, and I mean a LOT. In 2021 alone I went on 28 flights! I could never bear the thought of Jasper being stuck in a cold, metal box all day surrounded by constant barking. That's why I've been using Rover.com for four years, and it's been a lifesaver. Rover connects you with dog walkers and sitters who care for your dog in their home - or yours! Before booking, I always recommend scheduling a meet-and-greet to ensure your pup will be comfortable. My largest tip is to trust your and your dog's instincts; they'll tell you if something is off. However, all profiles on Rover.com passed a background check which gives me extra peace of mind.

Your One-Stop Shop for Dog Essentials
Amazon is where I get Jasper's favorite treats and toys. Although I use Chewy.com for his flea and tick treatments. Ordering is a breeze - I have an automatic order every six months, which is the perfect time frame to restock. Below are some of Jasper's favorite treats, toys, and even spa treatments.
High-Value Training Treats:
These freeze-dried liver treats may make your hands stinky, but they are worth it! Jasper isn't usually food-motivated, but these treats were our secret weapon during his training as a puppy.
Durable Chew Toy:
If you dog is an aggressive chewer, I cannot recommend this toy enough. You can unscrew it, place treats inside, and let your dog go to town. Jasper has chewed on it for many years now, and it's still going strong. Just be sure to order the correct size for your dog and grab some refill treats.
Update: March 2024
This toy is the new favorite. Jasper finds it and brings it to me, dropping it at my feet demanding that I refill it. I have to actually hide it somedays because it would be too much food in one day! A few friends of mine have purchased it as well with raving reviews from their pumps. I can't recommend it enough, but as usual, make sure to choose the right size for your doggo.
Sunblock and Paw Balm:
Jasper's white fur and pink skin make him prone to sunburn, especially on his sweet little nose and ears. This sunblock stick is easy to apply (although he still protests) and keeps him protected during beach and park outings. It's my favorite because it's not a spray or a lotion, it's essentially a roll-on! After outdoor adventures, I like to treat his paws with this nourishing balm that soothes any cracks. It is pH balanced, vegan and cruelty free. I love this product because Jasper's paws are so ridiculously soft afterward and it smells so good! Pro tip: Put some long, skinny socks on your dog after applying the balm to prevent them from licking it off.
